Carving is the process of artistic treatment of the wood that involves cutting out and “carving” the wood in different decorative shapes and ornaments. Wood carving, as a craft, has been popular in Bulgaria since the Slavic people first settled on the Balkan peninsula.

In the beginning wood carving was used to compliment framing of icons, ceiling decorations and other various objects in the household. Today artist take this craft to new hights thus making wood carving a part of modern art.

Carnival masks famous since the last century
Two of the carnival masks made by Yordanovi ART which had won silver medal on the International Festival “Surva” in Pernik, Bulgaria
And today we continue to drive the evil spirits away from our hearts and be a part of this magic!
The tradition demands it.
My name is Ludmil Yordanov and I am a third generation kuker( man/woman dressed in a costume with a huge and scary mask th at drives the evil spirits away,part of a big Bulagrian festival) and this are my grandma and grandpa. Our costumes and masks are made only from natural products like wood, leather, animal horns and etc. and are solely crafted by the Yordanovi Family

Even though some masks are a souvenir they have to depict a very scary character ,after all their goal is to get rid of all evil energy around us. According to ancient Bulgarian beliefs “Kuker” masks are used in the spaces we inhabit, home, office, etc. That way they neutralize or change the bad thoughts of your guest or people around you.
Part of the main components of a “Kuker” mask are teeth, horns, skin from sheep, goat, bear, wolf or other animal. Red is a main colour. Now for more than 30 years Yordanovi ART has been a part of the National Holiday “Surva” which is in the representative list of UNESCO for non-material cultural heritage of humanity where we have won gold medals for best “Kuker” mask.
